Well, let me tell ya, this fella John Oliver, the one on that Last Week Tonight show, he’s got folks scratchin’ their heads. Is he left, is he right? Nobody seems to rightly know!
Some folks say he’s one of them liberals, always goin’ on about this and that, complainin’ about the government. You know, the kind that wants to give everything away for free. Always talkin’ about fairness and equality, like life is ever fair, I tell ya! He hollers about the rich folks not payin’ enough taxes, and how the poor folks ain’t gettin’ a fair shake. Sounds like a lefty to me, but then again, my hearin’ ain’t what it used to be.
- He talks a lot about them politicians.
- Always makin’ fun of them, too.
- Don’t matter if they’re donkey or elephant, he gets after ‘em all.
But then, there’s other times when he says things that make ya think maybe he ain’t so far left after all. He goes after them crazy college kids sometimes, the ones always yellin’ about this and that, wantin’ to change everything. He’s not afraid to call out the nonsense, no matter where it comes from. He gets on them big companies too, the ones that are always tryin’ to rip you off. Makes you wonder if he’s just one of those common-sense fellas, ya know? The kind that just wants things to be fair and square, no matter what side it comes from. Lord knows, common sense ain’t too common these days.
This whole left and right thing, it’s a mess if you ask me. Back in my day, things were simpler. You either worked hard, or you didn’t. You either minded your own business, or you got into trouble. Now, everyone’s got an opinion, and they ain’t afraid to shout it from the rooftops. And this John Oliver, he’s shoutin’ louder than most. But is he shoutin’ for the left, or the right? It’s like tryin’ to catch a greased pig at the county fair – just when you think you got him, he slips right outta your hands.
Last Week Tonight, that’s what he calls his show. He talks about all sorts of things – politics, sure, but also about the news, them big companies, and just about anything that gets his goat. And he’s funny, I’ll give him that. He makes you laugh, even when you don’t want to. But sometimes, I think he’s just tryin’ to stir up trouble. Get folks all riled up. Maybe that’s his whole game, you know? Don’t matter if he’s left or right, as long as he’s got people talkin’.
He went on and on about that election, the one for president. Talked about them candidates like they were sumthin’ the cat dragged in. Didn’t seem to like either one of ‘em, far as I could tell. He just kept pokin’ holes in their stories, makin’ ‘em look like fools. And then there was that time he talked about them midterms. Scared the bejesus outta me, talkin’ about how things was goin’ to heck in a handbasket. Made it sound like the whole country was gonna fall apart.
So, is he left or right? I reckon he’s just John Oliver. He’s his own man, sayin’ what he thinks, no matter who it upsets. And that’s rare these days, ya know? Most folks just want to go along to get along, stick with their own kind. But this fella, he ain’t afraid to step on some toes. Maybe he’s a little bit of both left and right, maybe he’s neither. Maybe he’s just tryin’ to make sense of it all, just like the rest of us. Or maybe he’s just lookin’ for a laugh. Lord knows, we all could use a good laugh these days.
They say his show is on HBO, whatever that is. Some fancy cable channel, I guess. We don’t get that out here in the sticks. I hear about him from my niece, the one that went off to the city. She’s always talkin’ about what John Oliver said, like he’s the gospel truth. But I tell her, take it all with a grain of salt, honey. Nobody’s got all the answers, not even that fella on the TV. He’s just tellin’ stories, the way he sees ‘em. And it’s up to us to figure out what to make of it all.
Anyways, that’s what I think about that John Oliver fella. Left or right, he’s sure got folks talkin’, and that’s somethin’, I guess. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I got to go check on them chickens. They’re probably gettin’ into mischief again.
