Okay, so I recently had a bit of a scare and needed to get tested, but I don’t have insurance right now. I was pretty freaked out about the potential cost, so I figured I’d share my experience figuring out how much STD testing is at urgent care without insurance.

My Urgent Care STD Testing Adventure (Without Insurance)
First, I called a few urgent care places near me. I just straight-up asked them, “Hey, how much would it cost for STD testing without insurance?” Some places were kinda vague, but others gave me a general range. It seemed like it was gonna depend on which tests I actually needed.
I picked one that seemed reasonably priced and had good reviews. When I got there, I explained my situation to the front desk. They were pretty cool about it and explained that I’d need to see a doctor first to figure out what tests were necessary.
The doctor asked me a bunch of questions about my symptoms and, uh, recent activities. It was a little awkward, but I answered everything honestly. Based on that, she recommended a few specific tests.
Before they did anything, they gave me a breakdown of the costs for each test. Here’s the general idea of what I was looking at (these are just my rough estimates, yours could be way different):
- Chlamydia and Gonorrhea: These seemed to be bundled together a lot, and the price range I got was somewhere around $100 to $150.
- Syphilis: This one was separate, and I think it was around $60 to $90.
- HIV: This also varied, but was probably in the $70 to $100 range.
- Herpes: tests can vary from $40-$150.
I ended up getting the Chlamydia/Gonorrhea test and the Syphilis * is very important to know that prices change all the time.

Overall, it wasn’t cheap, but it wasn’t as bad as I’d feared. I also learned that some places offer payment plans or discounts for self-pay patients, so it’s definitely worth asking about that!
The whole process was pretty straightforward. I got my results back in a few days, and thankfully, everything was negative. The peace of mind was definitely worth the cost, even without insurance.
