Alright, so, let’s talk about this patient sex thing. You know, back in my day, it was simple. Boy or girl, that’s it. But now, the young folks, they got all sorts of ways they wanna be called. Makes it a bit confusing, I tell ya.
Now, the doctors, they gotta keep track of all this stuff. They got these papers, medical records they call ’em, and they gotta write down if you’re a man or a woman. But it ain’t always that easy, see? Sometimes, a person’s born one way, but they feel like they’re something else inside. And the doctors, they gotta figure out how to write that down proper.
- They got this “sex assigned at birth” thing. That’s what the doctor sees when you’re born. Boy or girl, like I said.
- But then they got this other thing, “gender,” they call it. That’s how you feel inside, who you are in your heart.
It’s important to know both, they say. The doctors, they use the “sex assigned at birth” to figure out your medicine and stuff. But they also gotta know how you feel inside, so they can treat you right, you know? With respect.
Now, they got all these codes and tables and whatnot. Big books full of numbers and words. They gotta pick the right code to put in your record. And sometimes, the codes ain’t good enough. They just got “male” and “female” and then “unknown.” But what if you ain’t exactly any of them? What if you’re somewhere in between?
That’s where it gets tricky. They’re tryin’ to make it better, though. They’re tryin’ to add more choices, so everyone can be counted right. It’s important to get it right, they say. So they can give everyone the best care possible.
They’re even askin’ people straight out now. When you go to the doctor, they give you a paper and ask you how you wanna be called. Man, woman, or somethin’ else. It’s good, I guess. Let’s people be themselves.
But it sure is different from my day. We didn’t have all these fancy words and codes. You were a man or a woman, and that was that. But times change, I guess. And people change. And the doctors, they gotta change with ’em.
They’re puttin’ all this stuff in the computers now, too. Big computer systems that keep track of everyone’s health records. And they gotta make sure the computers can handle all the different ways people identify themselves. It’s a lot of work, I tell ya. But it’s important work.
Sometimes, folks change their minds, too. Maybe they thought they were one thing, and then they realize they’re somethin’ else. And the doctors gotta be able to change their records, too. It’s all about makin’ sure everyone feels comfortable and respected.
And it ain’t just about the doctors, neither. It’s about everyone. Treatin’ each other with kindness and understanding. That’s what it all comes down to, really. Whether you’re a man, a woman, or somethin’ else, we’re all just people. And we all deserve to be treated right.
So, yeah, this patient sex thing, it’s complicated. But it’s important. And it’s good that people are finally payin’ attention to it. It’s about makin’ sure everyone gets the care they need, no matter who they are. That’s what the good Lord wants, I reckon.
And that’s all there is to it, really. Just treatin’ folks the way you wanna be treated. That’s the golden rule, ain’t it?
