Okay, so today I decided to mess around with creating some “animated couples.” I’ve always been kinda fascinated by animation, and I figured, why not give it a shot? It seemed like a fun little project.

Getting Started
First, I needed some characters. I’m no artist, so I couldn’t just draw something from scratch. I poked around online for some free-to-use character models, and finally found a couple of simple, cartoony figures that I liked. They weren’t anything fancy, but they were perfect for a beginner like me.
Figuring Out the Software
Next up was the software. I’ve dabbled in some basic video editing before, but I’d never actually done any animation. I grabbed a free, open-source animation program that a friend recommended – I think it was called “Pencil2D” or something like that. It looked pretty straightforward, at least at first glance.
The First Few Frames
I started by importing my character models into the program. Then came the hard part: actually making them move! I decided to start simple, with just a basic walking animation. The first few frames were… rough. The characters looked like they were having a seizure, more than walking. There was a lot of trial and error – moving limbs bit by bit, playing it back, tweaking it again, and again, and again.
Slowly Getting the Hang of It
It took a while, but I slowly started to get the hang of it. I figured out how to use the “onion skinning” feature, which lets you see the previous and next frames faintly, so you can get a better sense of the movement. That was a game-changer! My characters still looked a bit jerky, but at least they were starting to resemble actual walking humans (or, well, cartoons).
Adding Some Interaction
Once I had the basic walking down, I wanted to make the couple actually interact. I thought it would be cute to have them hold hands. This was… surprisingly tricky. Getting their hands to line up properly, and stay together as they moved, took a lot of fiddling. I spent a good hour just getting that one little detail right.

The Final Result (for Now!)
After a few hours of work, I had a short little animation of my couple walking and holding hands. It’s definitely not perfect – it’s still pretty basic, and there are a few awkward moments. But honestly, I’m pretty proud of it! It’s my first real attempt at animation, and it actually looks… kind of okay!
Things I learned:
- Animation takes a LOT of patience.
- Even simple movements require a ton of small adjustments.
- Onion skinning is your best friend.
- It helps a lot to have a program you like working with.
I’m definitely going to keep playing around with this. Maybe I’ll try adding some more complex movements, or even some backgrounds. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll actually be good at this!
