Okay, so, I’ve been watching this show called “Insecure” on HBO, right? And let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride. I started watching it because everyone was talking about it, and I wanted to see what the hype was all about.

Why is Insecure Sex Scene so realistic? The shows creator explains it!

I got myself some snacks, got comfy on the couch, and started binging. First few episodes? Pretty good. The characters, Issa and Molly, they’re relatable. They’re going through the same stuff a lot of us go through – work drama, relationship problems, the whole nine yards.

But then, we get to the sex scenes. Now, I’m no prude, but these scenes? They felt different. They weren’t all glamorous and perfect like you see in some other shows. They were awkward, sometimes even cringey, but in a way that felt real, you know?

  • In one episode, there’s this scene where Issa is with her boyfriend, and they’re trying to have sex, but it’s just not working. They’re fumbling around, it’s uncomfortable, and eventually, they just give up. I remember thinking, “Wow, I’ve been there.”
  • Then there’s another scene where Molly is with a guy, and they’re about to do it, but then she gets in her head and starts overthinking everything. She’s worried about how she looks, what he’s thinking, and it totally kills the mood. Again, super relatable.

I started noticing that Issa and Molly, they often hide their bodies during these scenes. Like, they’re always under the covers or the camera is only showing their faces. It made the scenes feel even more awkward, but also more realistic. It’s like they’re self-conscious, just like a lot of us are in real life.

I kept watching, and I realized that these awkward sex scenes, they’re kind of the point. The show is called “Insecure” for a reason. It’s about these characters’ insecurities, their flaws, their vulnerabilities. And the sex scenes, they’re just another way to show that.

I also found out that some people were criticizing the show for not using condoms in the sex scenes. But then Issa Rae, the creator, she responded and said that they usually put condoms in the background or imply their use. She even showed some screenshots with condom wrappers. So, they are thinking about it, even if it’s not always obvious.

Another thing I learned is that a lot of the actors on the show come from an improv background. So, when they’re shooting these scenes, they’re often improvising a lot of it. That probably contributes to the awkwardness and the realness of it all.

So, yeah, I finished the show, and I gotta say, those awkward sex scenes? They stuck with me. They made me think about my own insecurities, my own experiences. And honestly, I think that’s what makes “Insecure” such a great show. It’s not afraid to show the messy, uncomfortable parts of life, and that’s something we can all relate to.

It also got me thinking about how sex is usually portrayed on TV. It’s often so unrealistic, so perfect. But “Insecure” shows that it’s not always like that. Sometimes it’s awkward, sometimes it’s messy, and that’s okay. It’s just a part of life.

Final thought

Insecure challenged me to look at intimacy in a new way, and I appreciate that. It’s a show that’s not afraid to be real, and that’s something I respect.
