Oh, honey, this pregnant thing, ain’t no walk in the park, let me tell ya! My back hurts, my feet are swollen, and I’m hungry all the time. But it’s all gonna be worth it, they say. This little one’s gonna be a handful, I can feel it in my bones.

Pregnant: What You Really Need to Know (and What You Dont)

When I first found out I was with child, I was scared. Didn’t know what to do. Then those doctor folks, they told me some stuff. Said I need some green stuff, that called folic acid, good for the baby. And some vitamin D, that help little one’s bones.

They say you gotta eat right when you’re pregnant. Lots of good food. Gotta eat breakfast every day, that’s important. My mama always said breakfast is the most important meal, and she was right. And you gotta eat that fiber stuff, keeps things movin’, you know what I mean? And drink lots of water. Water’s good for ya, keeps you from gettin’ all dried up.

Now, they say don’t drink that alcohol when you’re carrying a little one. And stay away from raw fish, or fish with too much of that bad stuff in it, I forgot what they call it. No undercooked meat either. You gotta be careful with what you put in your body now. It ain’t just you anymore.

  • Eat breakfast every day, gotta keep your strength up.
  • Eat that fiber, keeps things going.
  • Drink lots and lots of water.
  • No alcohol! None of that stuff.
  • No raw fish.
  • No undercooked meat. Gotta cook it good.

My belly’s gettin’ bigger every day. Sometimes, it feels like this baby’s throwin’ a party in there! Lots of kickin’ and punchin’. And I get these pains, they call ’em contractions. They told me about this 5-1-1 thing. When the pain comes every 5 minutes, and they last for 1 minute, and this goes on for an hour, then it is time! Time to go see the doctor.

I’m scared and excited all at the same time. Never done this before, you know. But they say every mama feels this way. It is natural. And those midwives and nurses, they’ll help me through it. They know what they’re doin’. I saw one of them midwives, she knows how to take care of you.

Pregnant: What You Really Need to Know (and What You Dont)

Sometimes, my belly feels all wet. They say that is baby’s water bag. That means baby is coming soon! But sometimes it happens and baby is not ready yet. They told me that too.

Being pregnant is a lot of work. You gotta take care of yourself, eat right, and listen to those doctor folks. They know what’s best. They have a lot of appointments for you, make sure you go. They call it “antenatal”. That is a fancy word for taking care of you before baby comes.

You gotta take those vitamins too. They got all sorts of vitamins for pregnant women. They help the baby grow strong. It’s all a bit much, but you just gotta do what they say. For the baby’s sake.

This whole pregnant thing is a big change. Life ain’t gonna be the same after this little one comes along. But they say it’s the best kind of change. A blessing, they call it. And I believe ’em. I can’t wait to hold my little one in my arms. That’s gonna be the best day of my life.

I keep thinking, is it a boy or a girl? Don’t matter, long as it’s healthy. That’s all that matters. A healthy baby. That’s all any mama wants.

Pregnant: What You Really Need to Know (and What You Dont)

Well, I gotta go rest my weary bones. This pregnant belly is tiring me out. But I’ll be back to tell ya more later. There’s a lot to learn about this whole baby business, and I’m learning something new every day. It’s a wild ride, that’s for sure!

I just hope I’m doin’ everything right. For the baby, you know. That’s all that matters now. This little one is my whole world, even before it’s born. That’s the miracle of being pregnant, I guess. It changes everything.
