Okay, so lemme tell ya about the nasty surprise I found in my lettuce patch last Tuesday morning. Went out with my coffee, all ready to pick some greens for a salad, and bam – holes everywhere like Swiss cheese! Shiny slime trails all over the soil too. Classic white slug bug damage. Those slimy little jerks wrecked half my seedlings overnight. Felt like throwing my mug right then.

The Failed First Round
First thing I grabbed was that old bottle of chemical pellets from the shed. Scattered them around like crazy. Checked next day… nothing. Slugs were munching my spinach like it was a buffet line. Pellets looked untouched. Realized they probably dissolved in the dew or something. Total waste of money. Even found a dead earthworm near ’em – felt awful.
Poured beer in saucers next – yeah, the internet trick. Woke up to three drowned slugs floating in it. Gross, but didn’t make a dent. Dozens more were still chomping my kale like it was free real estate. Needed something bigger.
The Copper Tape Gamble
Dug out this roll of copper tape I bought years ago for who-knows-what. Made a shiny fence around my raised beds. Felt pretty clever… until it rained. Tape stopped sticking, curled up like old ribbon. Watched a slug glide right over it while I ate breakfast. Epic fail.
What Actually Worked
Got mad. Dug trenches around every single bed – deep enough to bury a tuna can. Dropped these in the dirt:
- Sunk old yogurt cups filled with cheap beer near worst-hit plants
- Scrunched up damp newspapers between rows as slug motels
- Pounded short wooden stakes near seedlings to hang lettuce leaves as decoys
Woke up at dawn with a flashlight next day. Went full ninja mode:

- Lifted newspaper traps – bam, found 20+ slugs huddled under
- Checked cups – every one had 5+ slugs belly-up
- Picked off 12 more munching decoy leaves
Dumped ’em all in soapy water. Felt brutal but necessary.
Morning Patrol Routine
Now every morning: coffee in one hand, flashlight in other. Check traps, refill beer, replace soggy newspaper. Takes ten minutes tops. Found only two slugs yesterday. Plants are finally pushing out new leaves without holes. Hallelujah.
Still get a few sometimes after heavy rain, but nothing like before. Moral of the story? Forget fancy stuff. Beer traps and newspaper checks – old school wins. Garden smells like a bar patio now, but hey… salads are safe.
