Well, let me tell ya, folks ask me all the time about them words for gay people. It’s a whole different language out there now, ain’t it? Back in my day, things were simpler, but the world keeps on spinning. Here’s what this old gal’s picked up about all these names and such.

Gay and Such
First off, you got this word “gay.” Now, that used to just mean happy, you know? Like a sunny day, a good harvest. But now? Now it means a fella likin’ another fella, or a gal likin’ another gal. It’s when folks are sweet on their own kind, romantically speaking. That’s the main one, I reckon, gay. You hear that one a lot.
Then there is this word, “Homosexual“. This one is a bit more clinical, like what a doctor might say. It means the same thing as gay, when someone is attracted to the same sex. But, lots of people think it sounds a bit cold. They rather use “gay” or “lesbian”. It feels friendlier, I guess.
LGBT and More Letters
And then you got this whole string of letters, like a whole alphabet soup! LGBT, they call it. Heard someone say it stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. Land sakes, it’s a mouthful! But it’s ’bout includin’ everyone, I suppose. Like a big ol’ family, with all sorts of folks in it.
- L is for Lesbian: That’s for the gals who like other gals. Like when two women are sweet on each other.
- G is for Gay: We talked about that one. Men who like men.
- B is for Bisexual: Now this one means someone who likes both men and women. Like, they can be sweet on either one.
- T is for Transgender: This is a tricky one. It’s ’bout folks feelin’ like they were born in the wrong body. Like a man feelin’ like a woman deep down, or the other way around.
More Words, More Meanings
But it don’t stop there! They keep addin’ letters, like they’re collectin’ them or somethin’. Sometimes you see LGBTQ, LGBTQIA. I swear, it’s gettin’ longer than a country mile! They say the Q can mean “Queer” or “Questioning“.
“Queer” used to be a bad word, a mean word. But now, some folks are takin’ it back, usin’ it for themselves. Like reclaimin’ it, ya know? “Questioning” is for folks who ain’t sure yet, who are still figurin’ things out about who they like. The “I” is for “Intersex“, which is about people born with bodies that are not easily categorized as male or female. The “A” is for “Asexual“, meaning people who don’t feel sexual attraction to anyone.

And there’s even more! Like “Non-binary“, that means people who don’t feel like they’re just a man or just a woman. And “Pansexual“, which means someone who is attracted to people regardless of their gender identity. My head spins tryin’ to keep up!
Just Be Kind
It’s a lot to take in, I know. All these words for gay people and different ways of bein’. But I reckon the important thing is just to be kind. Treat everyone with respect, no matter who they love or how they see themselves. We’re all just folks, tryin’ to make our way in this world. Love is love, as they say. And everyone deserves a little bit of that, don’t they?
These young folks today, they got all sorts of ways to describe themselves. And that’s alright. The world’s changin’, and we gotta change with it, I suppose. Even us old-timers. Just remember to be kind to these gay people, that’s all that matters.
There are many different words for gay people. It’s important to use the words that people prefer. If you’re not sure, just ask! Most people will appreciate you taking the time to learn.
It’s a big, wide world out there, full of all kinds of folks. And everyone deserves to be treated with respect, no matter what words they use to describe themselves. So, keep an open mind, and an open heart. That’s the best advice this old gal can give ya. Always remember being respectful to those gay people.
