My Messy Sorority House Probate Journey
Okay, so picture this: My old sorority sister, Sarah – sweet girl, real quiet – passed away suddenly last fall. Total shock, hit everyone hard. Thing is, she never updated her stuff after moving out. Found out she still had a bunch of things listed at the sorority house – not just her old textbooks and photos (man, those were everywhere!), but actually owned a piece of a sofa the chapter bought years ago and even some artwork hanging in the common room. Nobody really thought about it until the housing chair, bless her heart, started panicking during spring cleaning. “Uh, guys? How do we even deal with Sarah’s stuff legally? That sofa? Doesn’t matter if it’s a mansion or a mug collection or, in our case, half a sofa.
My actual steps? Buckle up:
- Step 1: The Big Hunt. Dived headfirst into Sarah’s emails (her family gave permission), old chapter meeting minutes stored in dusty Google Drives, and even dug through ancient physical files in the house manager’s office closet. Found purchase receipts proving she partially paid for the sofa and artwork. Needed that proof.
- Step 2: Talking to Real People. Cold-called the county probate court. Got transferred like five times. Finally found a surprisingly helpful clerk who basically sighed and said, “Sorority stuff, huh? Not uncommon.” She walked me through needing the official death certificate (Sarah’s family had to get that) and any will she might have made. Luckily, Sarah did have a simple will.
- Step 3: Paperwork Nightmare. Downloading forms from the court website felt like downloading anxiety. Filled out the wrong form twice. Forms asking for “value of the estate.” Had to get super creative estimating the worth of used furniture partial ownership and some art prints. Seriously. Felt ridiculous.
- Step 4: Court Visit & Fees. Filed the petition officially with the court clerk. Paid filing fees – not crazy expensive for this little stuff, but still an unexpected cost the chapter had to cover upfront. Then we waited weeks. Tick, tock.
- Step 5: Executor Steps Up. Sarah’s will named her older sister as the “executor” – the person legally in charge of handling her stuff. Once the court officially gave her sister that authority (letters testamentary, they called it), we finally had someone clear to talk to.
- Step 6: Making a Deal. Sat down with Sarah’s sister and the current chapter president. Talked options: The sister could legally claim Sarah’s share of the items (weird, but possible). Or, the chapter could buy her out at our estimated value. Or, she could just sign it over to the chapter, maybe as a little memorial. Thank god she chose the last option – signed some docs relinquishing Sarah’s ownership claim back to the house. Phew.
Why did I even volunteer for this? Honestly? Because nobody else was going to do it, and we couldn’t just pretend her legal ownership stake didn’t exist. It felt wrong, and frankly, super messy legally for the chapter if we ignored it. Plus, Sarah deserved having her affairs handled properly, even the small stuff tangled up with the house.
So yeah, sorority probate. It wasn’t fun, it took months longer than I thought it would (seriously, courts are slow), and involved way more weird conversations about couch percentages than I ever imagined. But seeing that relinquishment paperwork signed? Huge relief. The house finally owns that stuff outright, and Sarah’s sister got the closure she needed. Learned a lot.
