Alright, so we decided to try something different the other night, you know, shake things up a bit. Landed on giving that edge-of-the-bed position a go. Seemed straightforward enough, right? Famous last words, sometimes.

Getting Started
First off, getting into position wasn’t exactly like sliding into a comfy armchair. She perched right on the very edge of the mattress. I was standing, or kinda kneeling, depending on the bed height – ours is a bit on the tall side, which immediately presented challenge number one. Finding that sweet spot where the height difference worked for both of us took some shuffling. A bit awkward, honestly, felt like assembling flat-pack furniture for a minute there.
We tried her facing away first. That seemed like the classic way you see it. Took a few tries to get the angle right so it felt, well, right. There was definitely a moment of “Okay, is this working? Can you feel anything other than the mattress edge digging in?” We’re pretty open, so talking through it helped avoid just fumbling around silently.
The Actual Attempt & Adjustments
Once we kinda found a starting point, things got moving. But here’s the kicker:
- Stability was a thing. For me, standing/kneeling, it felt like I needed to brace myself. Almost put a hand on the wall.
- For her, sitting right on the edge… well, it’s not exactly the most secure spot. Needed to make sure she felt stable and wasn’t about to tip off.
- Finding a good rhythm took conscious effort. It’s not like missionary where gravity helps keep you connected. You gotta actively manage the connection and the movement.
We had to adjust quite a bit. Tried shifting her position slightly, changing the angle of entry. Pillows came into play – one under her for a slight tilt maybe? Can’t recall exactly, it was all very ‘in the moment’ trial and error. Communication was key, lots of “How’s that?” and “Maybe try…” going back and forth. You can’t just assume it’s great for the other person just because it feels okay for you.
So, How Did It Go?
Was it mind-blowing? Eh, not exactly, not the first time anyway. It was… different. Offered a really deep angle, which was interesting. But the effort involved in just staying comfortable and coordinated kinda took away from the spontaneity sometimes. It wasn’t bad, just required more deliberate choreography than we expected.

It’s funny, reminded me of trying to learn a new board game. Looks simple on the box, but then you open the rules and there are fifty tiny steps you didn’t anticipate. You stumble through it the first time, maybe mess up a few rules, but you figure it out. This felt similar. You see a picture, looks easy, but the practical reality involves finding your footing, literally. We got there in the end, had a decent time, but it definitely went into the ‘needs practice’ category rather than ‘instant favorite’. We’ll probably try it again, maybe on a lower bed next time. Always learning, right?
