Okay, so I’ve been seeing this “undercut for curly hair” thing all over my feed, and my curls were getting seriously out of control. I figured, why not? Let’s give it a shot. I’m no professional, just a regular dude with a pair of clippers and a whole lot of hope.

Prepping the Mane
First things first, I washed my hair. Gotta start with a clean slate, right? I used my usual curly hair shampoo and conditioner, making sure it was all nice and hydrated. Then, I let it air dry most of the way, just so it wasn’t dripping everywhere.
Sectioning It Off
This was the tricky part. I grabbed a comb and, with shaky hands, tried to section off the top part of my hair – you know, the part that’s gonna stay long and curly. I clipped that up with some random clips I found in my bathroom drawer. It wasn’t pretty, but it did the job.
The Undercutting Begins!
Okay, deep breaths. I took my clippers – I think I used a #2 guard, but honestly, I was just winging it – and started buzzing the sides and back. I went slow, real slow, checking in the mirror like every five seconds. I definitely messed up a couple of times, but hey, that’s what the longer hair on top is for, right? To hide the mistakes!
- Started with the sides, going upwards.
- Then, I moved to the back, which was super awkward. I practically became a contortionist trying to see what I was doing.
- I kept checking and re-checking to make sure it was somewhat even.
Blending (or Trying To)
Once the buzzing was done, I took off the guard and tried to blend the undercut with the top a little bit. This is where things got really… interesting. I’m pretty sure I made it look a bit choppy in places, but again, curly hair is forgiving. I just kept telling myself that.
The Big Reveal
Finally, I unclipped the top section, shook it out, and… well, it wasn’t perfect. But it was definitely different! My curls looked way more defined on top, and the undercut gave it a cool, edgy vibe. I sprayed in some of my usual sea salt spray to give it some texture, and fluffed it up a bit.

Final Thoughts
It’s a little uneven in the back, I’m not gonna lie. But overall, I’m actually digging it! It’s way easier to manage, and it feels so much lighter. Would I recommend doing this yourself? Maybe not if you’re a perfectionist. But if you’re up for a little DIY adventure and don’t mind a few imperfections, go for it! Just be prepared for some awkward mirror moments and a whole lot of “trust the process.”
