It was a bit much for me, and I think for a few others too. I’m not one for confrontation, so my go-to move in these situations is usually the slow fade. So, do read receipts make it truly impossible to ghost? Well, you can still choose not to reply, obviously. But they make it impossible to ghost subtly. They strip away any plausible deniability. It’s like this:

- New way (with read receipts): You send a message. Delivered. Then… SEEN. And then… nothing. Crickets. Now you know they saw it. And you know they’re choosing silence.
It just changes the whole feeling of it, for both sides. If you’re the one being ignored, that “Read” followed by silence can sting a bit more than just wondering if your message got lost in the digital ether. It feels more personal, more like a deliberate snub.
So yeah, that’s my take from experience. Read receipts have definitely made the whole “ghosting” thing a lot more transparent, and in a way, more confrontational. You can’t just vanish like a digital phantom anymore. Now, if you disappear after reading a message, everyone knows you saw them, looked them in the eye (digitally speaking), and then just turned and walked away. It’s made things more direct, I suppose, but not always in a way that feels good.
