Now, let me tell y’all somethin’ about Charlie Brown—not the cartoon boy with the dog, no sir, but a real drag queen who was bigger than life down in Atlanta. This Charlie Brown wasn’t no ordinary person; this here was a legend. Born to sparkle and dazzle folks all over, Charlie took the stage like she owned it. She was a real sight, and I reckon folks are gonna remember her for a long time.
Charlie Brown, she was famous, honey. She’d get up there all done up, looking like somethin’ outta the movies, and just blow people away with her performances. Folks would come from all over just to see her. Now, she wasn’t one to be shy neither; she called herself the “Bitch of the South”. Yep, she had a personality, that’s for sure. She’d laugh, joke, and even roast folks in the crowd if they tried to sass her back.
Sadly, Ms. Charlie, bless her heart, passed away just recently on March 21, 2024. She’d had heart surgery back in February, but I guess things just took a turn. She was 74 years old when she left this world. I tell ya, Atlanta and the whole LGBTQ community are feelin’ it. It’s like losin’ a piece of history, ’cause she was that important.
Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s lots of drag queens out there today, but Charlie was somethin’ special. She’d been doin’ it for so long, back when bein’ a drag queen wasn’t so accepted, if ya know what I mean. Charlie paved the way for the young ones comin’ up now. She taught ‘em how to do it right, how to hold their heads high and put on a show.
They say she was kind of a teacher to the young queens too, which I think is mighty nice. Charlie Brown, she’d tell them not to worry about what other folks thought, to just be themselves. She taught ‘em how to walk in them high heels, how to do makeup that’d make ya look twice, and how to entertain a crowd till they’re cheerin’ and clappin’ like crazy.
Now, she might’ve been tough as nails on the outside—nobody’s gonna argue with that “Bitch of the South” title she gave herself—but folks who knew her say she had a big ol’ heart. Always made time to help folks out, didn’t matter if you was rich or poor or somethin’ else altogether. You show up at one of her shows, and she’d make sure you had a good time. That’s why so many folks are missin’ her right now.
People in Atlanta, they got memories of her, honey. She’s been around in that town for as long as anyone can remember, and her shows were somethin’ folks’d talk about for weeks after. They’d laugh about her jokes, talk about her outfits, and tell stories about what she said on stage. She was loved, that’s for sure.
Rest in peace, Ms. Charlie Brown. I reckon the heavens are gettin’ a mighty fine show right about now. She’s probably up there right now, lookin’ down on all of us and laughin’, sayin’ somethin’ sassy as usual. That’s just the way she was.
If y’all ever get a chance, remember her. Remember what she did for drag and how she taught folks to be themselves, no matter what. Charlie Brown might be gone, but her legacy? Honey, that’s gonna live on forever.
