Okay, so yesterday I tried to make some engagement photos, inspired by that “Masterminds” movie. You know, the one with Kate McKinnon and Zach Galifianakis. I thought it would be a fun, quirky theme for me and my partner.

First, I spent a good chunk of the morning looking for some inspiration. I scrolled through Pinterest, and I gotta say, there are tons of ideas out there! But not many were hitting that “Masterminds” vibe I was going for. I mostly found generic engagement shoot stuff, nothing too out there.
Then I remembered seeing a clip from the movie, the one where they take those hilariously awkward engagement photos. That was it! I decided to recreate some of those poses. I dug out some old clothes from the back of the closet that looked kinda like what they wore. My partner wasn’t too thrilled about the outfit choices, but they went along with it, thankfully!
We set up the camera in the living room, trying to mimic the backdrop from the movie scene. It wasn’t perfect, but hey, we’re not professional photographers. We fumbled around with the self-timer, striking poses that were supposed to look awkward and over-the-top. I even tried to copy Kate McKinnon’s expressions, which was a challenge, let me tell you!
- Set up camera in living room
- Try to mimic backdrop
- Fumble with self-timer
- Strike awkward poses
- Copy Kate McKinnon’s expressions
We ended up with a bunch of photos, and honestly, they’re pretty funny. Not exactly what I envisioned initially, but they definitely capture our goofy personalities. I learned that it’s way harder to look intentionally awkward than you’d think. Plus, my partner’s not exactly a natural in front of the camera, so that added another layer of, shall we say, “uniqueness” to the photos.
The Final Result
In the end, I’m happy we did it. It was a fun afternoon, and we got some memorable photos out of it. They might not be Pinterest-perfect, but they’re us. And that’s what matters, right? If you’re thinking about doing a themed engagement shoot, I say go for it! Just be prepared for some laughs and maybe a few awkward moments along the way.
