Okay, so I’ve been wanting to do something special for my long-distance partner, and I finally decided to go old-school: a love letter. But not just any love letter. I wanted it to be, like, extra special. Here’s how I did it.

Brainstorming & Gathering
First, I grabbed a notebook and just started jotting down everything I love about my person. Seriously, everything. From their goofy laugh to the way they always know how to cheer me up, even from miles away. I ended up with a pretty long list, which was awesome!
Then, I started thinking about specific memories. Like, that one time we video-called and made dinner “together,” even though we were in different time zones. Or that surprise care package they sent me when I was having a rough week. Those little things that really show how much we care about each other.
Crafting the Letter
I didn’t want to just write a generic “I love you” letter. I mean, duh, I love them! I wanted to SHOW them why I love them. So, I started by picking out the best bits from my brainstorming session. The things that really make my heart do that fluttery thing.
I decided to structure it kind of like a story. I started with how we met (or, you know, “met” in the digital age!), then moved on to some of my favorite memories, and then talked about how much I appreciate their support and love, even with the distance.
- Be Specific: Instead of saying “You’re amazing,” I wrote things like, “I love how you always make me laugh, even when I’m feeling down. Remember that time we tried to bake a cake together over video call and it was a total disaster? We laughed so hard we cried!”
- Be Honest: Long distance is tough. I didn’t shy away from that. I acknowledged the challenges, but also emphasized how much stronger our relationship is because of them.
- Be Romantic: I mean, it’s a love letter! I used some cheesy lines, sure, but I also made sure to be sincere. I told them how much I miss them, how much I look forward to seeing them again, and how much they mean to me.
Adding the Final Touches
I typed everything up, because my handwriting is atrocious. But I printed it on nice paper, to give it that extra touch. I also spritzed it with a little bit of my perfume, because scent is a powerful memory trigger. Hopefully, it’ll remind them of me whenever they smell it.

Finally, I found a cute envelope and decorated it with some stickers and doodles. I wanted it to look as special on the outside as it was on the inside.
And then sent it!
The result? They loved it! Said it made them cry (in a good way!). Mission accomplished. It really just took some time, some thought, and a whole lot of love.
