Okay guys, here’s how my acting workshop went yesterday when I tried those “act with love” tips everyone’s talking about. Felt super awkward at first, but man, it actually worked.

Why I Bother Trying This Stuff
Last month I bombed a community theater audition. Director said my romantic scene felt like “watching someone read grocery lists.” Ouch. So when my drama buddy Mike sent me that “5 tips to act with love” article, I figured why not.
My Living Room Practice Session
Cleared the coffee table, put on my rattiest sweatpants, and practiced Juliet’s balcony scene with a potted fern playing Romeo. Seriously. Followed the tips step-by-step:
Tip 1: Stare Into Their Soul (or Fern)
Article said to hold eye contact like you’re memorizing freckles. Tried it with that fern. Felt stupid for 10 minutes til I noticed how the leaves actually moved when my AC kicked on. Somehow made me talk slower, more tender.
Tip 2: Touch Like They’re Glass

Supposed to use gentle touches even during intense moments. Practiced fake-slapping the fern then immediately cupping its leaves. Weirdly made my angry lines sound sad instead of shouty. Who knew?
Tip 3: Whisper Secrets
This one was wild – say lines like you’re telling secrets across pillows. Did Juliet’s “parting is such sweet sorrow” bit breathing straight into the dirt. My cat gave me judgey eyes but dang, my voice got all shaky-real.
Tip 4: Smile With Your Eyeballs
Not teeth-smiling, but “crinkle your eyes like grandma seeing newborn you.” Practiced in the bathroom mirror til my cheeks hurt. Looked deranged at first but eventually got this soft focus thing happening.

Tip 5: Love the Mess-Ups
Article said lean into mistakes instead of panicking. Perfect chance when my cat attacked Romeo-fern mid-monologue. Just petted her and sighed “thus with a kiss my cat murders Romeo.” Got legit giggles from my empty living room.
How It Felt On Actual Stage
Tried it at open mic night last night with human scene partners. Still forgot lines twice, but get this – when I messed up, I did Tip 5: giggled and touched my partner’s arm lightly. Whole scene shifted from stiff to… warm? Afterwards three people said they actually teared up. Me! The grocery-list actor!
Biggest surprise? Doesn’t feel mushy or fake when you commit. Just makes everyone lean in closer. Like good chocolate versus cheap candy. Gonna keep abusing these tricks til my next audition.
