So, I had this itch, you know? After re-watching Pocahontas for probably the hundredth time, Grandmother Willow just stuck in my head. Not just the character, but the tree itself. That wise, ancient, flowing look. I thought, “I gotta try and make something like that.” Seemed like a cool little project.

Getting Started – Or So I Thought

First off, I just grabbed a pencil and some paper. Started sketching, trying to get those iconic drooping branches. Easy, right? Wrong. My first few doodles looked more like sad, melting candelabras than any mystical tree. I realized pretty quick that just “drawing a willow” wasn’t going to cut it. This tree had a personality, a presence.

I then went online, not for tutorials, but just for pictures. Real willow trees, and then stills from the movie. Trying to see what made that willow special. It’s the way the branches seem to cascade, almost like a waterfall of leaves, and that sturdy, knowing trunk. It’s got that look like it’s seen things, you know?

The Messy Middle Part

Okay, so materials. I rummaged through my craft box. Found some old wire, thought that’d be good for the branches. Bendy, but could hold a shape. For the trunk, I figured I could build it up with something, maybe some clay I had lying around, or even just tightly wrapped paper built up in layers. The leaves, though, that was the tricky bit. How do you get that delicate, numerous look without it becoming a solid green blob?

My first attempt at the branches was a disaster. I used wire that was too stiff. They stuck out all awkward. Looked more like a cactus trying to be a willow. Frustrating, man. I almost packed it all in right there. Then, for the leaves, I tried cutting out tiny individual paper leaves. Took forever, and when I tried to stick them on, it just looked… well, like a kid’s school project that got a C minus.

  • Tried thicker wire for the trunk base.
  • Switched to a much thinner, more pliable wire for the branches. This was a bit of a breakthrough.
  • Experimented with strips of very thin fabric for leaves, thinking it might hang better.

The fabric strips were better than individual paper leaves, but still not quite right. It was all a bit clunky. I realized the movie version has this ethereal, almost transparent quality to the foliage. It’s not just green; it’s light and shadow and movement.

Finally, Getting Somewhere

So, I took a break. Stepped away. Sometimes you just gotta do that. Came back with a fresh eye. I realized I needed more layers and a softer touch. For the trunk, I ended up using a core of bundled thicker wire, then wrapped it with textured paper and painted it with a few shades of brown and grey to give it that aged look. Took a few goes to get the gnarled effect right. Lots of scrunching and dabbing paint.

For the branches, that thinner wire was key. I made way more of them than I initially thought I’d need. I twisted a few strands together for the main branches and then had single strands coming off those. The real “aha!” moment for the leaves was when I tried using very, very thin crepe paper, cut into long, thin strips, and then sort of frayed the edges. I layered these, different shades of green, some with a touch of yellow. And I didn’t glue them flat; I tried to get them to hang and twist a bit naturally. This took ages, no joke. Each little strand.

I attached these leafy strips starting from the tips of the branches and working inwards. It was painstaking. My fingers were sore. But slowly, slowly, it started to look less like a craft project gone wrong and more like… well, something resembling Grandmother Willow. I even tried to get that slight magical shimmer by dusting it with a tiny bit of iridescent powder I had from some other long-forgotten project. Don’t know if it really shows, but it made me feel better.

What I Reckon Now

It’s done. Sits on my shelf. It’s not perfect, not by a long shot. If you look too close, you’ll see all the little cheats and messy bits. But from a distance, and with a bit of imagination, it kinda captures that feeling I was going for. It wasn’t about making an exact movie prop replica. It was about seeing if I could bring a bit of that movie magic, that sense of an ancient, wise presence, into something I made with my own hands.

The biggest thing I learned? Patience, mostly. And that sometimes the simplest looking things are way more complicated than you think. It’s like anything, really. You start with an idea, you hit a wall, you get frustrated, you almost give up, but if you stick with it, sometimes, just sometimes, you end up with something you’re kinda proud of. Even if it is just a little tree made of wire and paper.
