Okay, so I’ve been seeing this “fade undercut” thing all over my Instagram feed, and I finally decided to give it a shot. My hair was getting kinda shaggy, and I was ready for a change, but I’m no professional, you know? So this was a total DIY experiment. Wish me luck, right?

First things first, I gathered my tools. I have this old hair clipper set that I’ve used for, like, years, plus some scissors, a couple of combs, and a spray bottle filled with water. Pretty basic stuff.
The Undercut
I started by sectioning off the top part of my hair. Basically, I just used my fingers to separate the hair I wanted to keep long from the hair I wanted to buzz. I used a comb to try and get a clean line, but honestly, it wasn’t perfect. I tied up the top part with a hair tie, just to keep it out of the way.
Then came the scary part – the clippers! I put on the longest guard I had (I think it was a #8?) and started buzzing the sides and back. My hand was shaking a little, I’m not gonna lie. I just went slow and steady, trying to keep the clipper moving in a smooth, upward motion. I kept checking in the mirror to make sure I wasn’t making any crazy lines.
After the first pass with the longest guard, I switched to a shorter one (a #4, I think). I went over the same areas again, but I didn’t go as high up. The goal was to create that gradual transition, the “fade” part, you know?
The Fade
This is where it got tricky. I took off the guard completely (zero-guarding) and very, very carefully tried to blend the line between the buzzed hair and the slightly longer hair. This was super hard, and I definitely messed up a few times. I just kept going back and forth with the clippers, tilting them at different angles, trying to smooth out any harsh * is not easy!

I also used the scissors to clean up any stray hairs around my ears and the back of my neck. Just little snips here and there to make it look a bit neater.
The Top
Finally, I took down the top part of my hair. I sprayed it with water to make it a little easier to work with. I basically just trimmed the ends a bit, trying to keep the length mostly the same. I’m not great at cutting hair, so I didn’t want to do anything too drastic.
The Result
- It’s definitely not perfect. There are a few uneven spots, and the fade isn’t as smooth as I’d like.
- But honestly, I don’t hate it! It’s definitely a change, and it feels way lighter and cooler.
- For a first attempt at a fade undercut, done by myself in my bathroom, I’m pretty proud of it.
- Next step: find some styling to make the style.
I’d say, if you’re thinking about trying this, just go for it! Worst case scenario, it grows back, right? Just be prepared to maybe mess up a little, and don’t expect salon-quality results on your first try. It’s all part of the learning process!
