Decoding Queer Identity for Short in the NYT Crossword

So, the term “queer” has been around for a long time. It used to mean somethin’ different back in the day, but now, it’s used to cover a whole bunch of people who don’t quite fit into the usual categories of man and woman. You got your gays, lesbians, bisexuals, trans folks, and others who are all lumped under the big umbrella of queer. It’s a term that embraces all sorts of folks who are a little outside the box when it comes to gender and sexuality.

Now, when we talk about “queer identity for short,” we ain’t talkin’ ’bout the full thing every time. Sometimes, it’s just easier to use a short form. Take “ARO” for example. You might have seen it pop up in crossword puzzles like the New York Times one. “ARO” stands for “aromantic,” which means someone who doesn’t feel romantic attraction. It’s a word that’s part of that bigger queer umbrella. It’s a simple, easy way to refer to folks who don’t fall in love or feel that romantic spark like others might.

In these puzzles, you might also come across “ENBY,” which is another short form. It’s for folks who don’t identify strictly as male or female, but as non-binary. So, instead of sayin’ “I’m not a man, not a woman,” they just say “ENBY,” like it’s a nickname. It’s quicker, and folks understand what’s being said without all the extra explanation.

The thing about these acronyms like “ARO” and “ENBY” is that they’re real helpful for folks who don’t want to spend a whole bunch of time explainin’ themselves. If you say you’re “ARO,” folks know right away that you’re not interested in romance. If you say you’re “ENBY,” they understand you don’t fit into that old-fashioned man-woman mold. It makes life easier, especially when you’re out there in the world, tryin’ to explain who you are without gettin’ bogged down by too many words.

But I reckon the most important thing to know is that these terms are always changin’. People find new ways to describe themselves, and some of these words might not mean the same thing in a few years. It’s all about how people wanna be seen, how they wanna show the world who they are. And that’s a good thing, if you ask me. Folks should be able to be themselves, no matter how that looks.

When it comes to these queer identities, there ain’t no one-size-fits-all. Some people will call themselves queer, others might say they’re gay or lesbian. Some folks prefer labels like bi or pan, while others just don’t wanna bother with any labels at all. And that’s okay. The important thing is that people get to be who they are, however they want to express it.

Now, I know there’s some folks out there who might not quite understand all this. They might say, “Well, back in my day, things were simpler. You was either a man or a woman.” But times change, and people change with ’em. It ain’t about somethin’ bein’ wrong or right, it’s just about bein’ open to the fact that there’s more than one way to live your life. And if someone wants to go by “ARO” or “ENBY” or any other term, that’s their business. We all got the right to be who we are, and no one should be shamed for it.

So next time you come across a crossword puzzle with a clue like “Queer identity, for short,” and you see “ARO” or “ENBY,” you’ll know what it means. It’s just a little shorthand for folks who don’t fit into the old categories, but still got a place in this world just like anybody else.

And remember, whether you call yourself queer, gay, bi, or somethin’ else entirely, what matters most is that you’re bein’ true to yourself. Ain’t no right or wrong way to love or live your life, as long as you’re happy and treatin’ others with kindness and respect. That’s all that really counts in the end.
