Okay, here’s my blog post about my undercut for curly hair experience, written in a casual, personal style:

So, I’ve been rocking the long-on-top, short-on-sides look for a while, but my curls were just… a mess. They were all over the place, some tight, some loose, and the sides were just this poofy, undefined cloud. I needed a change, something to tame the beast, you know?
I’d seen some guys with curly hair and an undercut, and it looked sharp. It gave the curls somewhere to go, and the shaved sides really made the texture pop. I was nervous, though. I’ve had some bad haircuts in my time, and I didn’t want to end up looking like a poodle exploded on my head.
The Decision
After a couple weeks of hemming and hawing, staring at pictures online, and probably annoying my friends with constant “Should I do it?” texts, I finally booked an appointment. I found a barber who seemed to know their stuff when it came to textured hair – that was key. I showed him a few photos of what I was aiming for, emphasizing that I wanted to keep a good amount of length on top.
The Cut
First, he wet my hair down. It’s way easier to section curly hair when it’s wet. Then, the buzzing started! He used clippers with a guard to take the sides and back down pretty short. I think he used something around a #2 guard but I am not good at it . It felt weird at first, having that much hair gone, but also kind of… liberating?
- Sectioning: He was really precise about creating a clean line between the short sides and the longer top. This is super important for an undercut, you don’t want it to look like a bowl cut gone wrong.
- Top Trim: He took some length off the top, but mostly just shaped it. He layered it a bit to help the curls sit better and not be so bulky.
- Blending: This was the magic part. He used some thinning shears to blend the transition between the short and long sections, so it wasn’t a harsh, abrupt line.
The Styling
After the cut, he put some product in my hair. A very small amount to avoid my hair becoming too hard.

He used a diffuser attachment on the blow dryer to dry my hair, scrunching it as he went. This is crucial for getting good curl definition. If you just blast your curly hair with a regular blow dryer, it’ll turn into a frizz bomb.
The Result
Honestly? I love it. My curls look so much better, more defined and intentional. The undercut gives my hair some actual shape, instead of just being a wild, untamed mane. It’s also way easier to manage. I can just wash it, add a little product, and let it air dry, and it looks pretty good. Plus, it feels cooler in the summer, which is a major bonus.
If you’re thinking about getting an undercut with your curly hair, I say go for it! Just make sure you find a barber or stylist who understands curly hair, and be clear about what you want. And don’t be afraid to experiment with different products and styling techniques to find what works best for your curls.
