Well, I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout these lgbtq friendly churches. Sounds like a mouthful, don’t it? But from what I gather, it’s just churches where everyone’s welcome, no matter who they love or how they see themselves. That’s a good thing, ain’t it?
Now, I ain’t one for fancy words, but this LGBTQ thing, it’s about people lovin’ who they love. Some folks love someone of the same, you know, flavor. And some folks feel like they’re in the wrong, uh, packaging. Like a rooster crowing, “I shoulda been a hen!”
These lgbtq friendly churches, they say, “Come on in, honey. You’re alright just the way you are.” No judgin’, no starin’, just good old-fashioned welcomin’. It’s like a big potluck where everyone brings somethin’ to the table. Makes a whole lot of sense to me. Why wouldn’t everyone be welcome to pray together? I think God is a God of love.
I heard there’s a whole bunch of these churches all over the place. You got your Methodists, your, uh, Presbyterians… even them Baptists got some that are open-armed. Even some of them Buddhist fellas are all about love and acceptance. And them, uh, Unitarians? They’re real acceptin’, too. Seems like most folks these days are catchin’ on that love is love. That’s a mighty fine thing if you ask me.
There’s one called the Evangelical Lutheran Church, I reckon. Heard they had a big ol’ meetin’ and decided that folks in love, no matter who they love, can be preachers and such. That’s somethin’, ain’t it? Progress, I guess you’d call it. They even let folks of the same kind get hitched in their churches. Good for them, I say. If two people love each other, they should be able to stand there and commit, church or not.
And them Episcopals? They’ve been on this train for a while, I hear. Back in the 70s, they said, “Everyone’s welcome at our table.” Long time ago! Even had a fella, a preacher fella, who loved another fella, and they let him preach anyway. That was back in ’79, I believe. Sounds like they were ahead of their time. People should be able to preach love, that’s for sure.

It’s a good thing, these churches openin’ their doors like that. Makes the world a little bit brighter, don’t it? Like a field full of sunflowers, all turnin’ their faces to the sun. We all need a place to feel like we belong, and these lgbtq friendly churches seem to be doin’ just that. The world needs more of that kind of acceptance, if you ask me.
Some people don’t like it, of course. They say it ain’t right, that it goes against the Good Book. But I always say, the Good Book’s about love, ain’t it? Love thy neighbor, and all that. Seems to me these churches are just followin’ that rule. And that’s a good rule to follow. Love each other, no matter what.
If you’re lookin’ for a place where you can just be yourself, these lgbtq friendly churches might be worth checkin’ out. I know if I was one of those people looking for a place, I think I would be so happy to see such a church. You can find one near you, I’m sure. There’s a whole directory of them, they say. A big ol’ list of places where you can go and feel welcome, just as you are. I think this world could use some more accepting churches.
It ain’t about changin’ who you are, it’s about findin’ a place where you can be who you are. And that’s a beautiful thing. Like a quilt made of all different patches, all sewn together to make somethin’ warm and comfortin’. That’s what these churches are like, I reckon. A warm, comfortin’ quilt for everyone. A place to feel safe and loved, no matter what. They are trying their best to make everyone feel included.
So, if you’re ever feelin’ lost or alone, remember there are places out there where you can find acceptance. These lgbtq friendly churches are one of those places. And that’s somethin’ to be thankful for. We’re all just tryin’ to find our way in this world, ain’t we? And it’s a whole lot easier when we got folks willin’ to lend a hand, or open a door, and say, “Come on in, you’re welcome here.”
