Alright, let me tell you about my blue waffle adventure. It all started this morning when my kiddo asked for waffles. You know, the usual breakfast routine. But then, outta nowhere, she says, “Can we make them BLUE, Daddy?”

So, I’m standing there, kinda blinking, thinking, “Blue waffles? How hard can that be?” Famous last words, right?
First thing I did was hit up the pantry. Grabbed the usual suspects: flour, sugar, baking powder, salt. You know, the dry stuff. Then I raided the fridge for milk, eggs, and some melted butter. Standard waffle ingredients, nothing fancy.
Now, for the blue. I skipped the food coloring aisle at the store. Nah, that’s too easy, and honestly, who knows what’s in that stuff? Instead, I remembered I had some blueberries in the freezer. Figured I could blend them up and use that as a natural blue dye.
Here’s where things got interesting.
- I tossed about a cup of frozen blueberries into the blender with a splash of milk. Whizzed it up until it was a purplish-blue smoothie. Looked promising!
- Then, I mixed all the dry ingredients in a big bowl. Made a well in the center, like you see on TV.
- Poured in the wet ingredients: the blueberry puree, milk, eggs, and melted butter. Started whisking.
The batter turned this… kinda greyish-purple. Not exactly the vibrant blue I was hoping for. It looked a little sad, to be honest.

But hey, I’m not one to give up easily. I figured maybe the heat would bring out the blue. So, I preheated the waffle iron, sprayed it with some cooking spray, and poured in the batter.
The moment of truth.
Waited for the little light on the waffle iron to turn green. Lifted the lid… and… they were still greyish-purple. Sigh. They smelled good, though! Like blueberries and waffles, so that was a plus.
I plated them up for the kiddo, added some whipped cream and extra blueberries on top to distract from the color situation. She took one look and said, “They’re not very blue, Daddy.”
Kids, man. They keep it real.

Anyway, she still ate them! Said they tasted good, even if they weren’t as blue as she wanted. So, all in all, a partial success. I learned that frozen blueberries don’t exactly make vibrant blue waffles. Maybe next time I’ll try spirulina powder or something.
For now, greyish-purple waffles it is! At least they’re edible. And hey, it was a fun little experiment. You win some, you lose some, right?
