Well, I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout this “trans” thing, wonderin’ if it should have a big letter at the start. You know, like when you write “America” or “Monday.” Is trans capitalized? This is what them young people askin’ now. Seems like a simple thing, but it gets folks all riled up. I just listen and try to make sense of it all.

Some say it’s gotta be a big “T” all the time. Like it’s a real important name or somethin’. They say it’s like writin’ “Pacific” or “Atlantic,” you always give them that big letter. But then others, they say no, it’s not like that. They say it’s just a word, like “big” or “small.” You don’t go ’round writin’ “Big” and “Small” with a big letter, do ya?
Now, I heard one fella sayin’ if you use “trans” like doin’ somethin’, like “trans-form” or “trans-late” you use a small letter, then that’s different. But even then, that don’t sound right to me. Why would one word have so many rules? It’s like them fancy grammar rules them teachers used to talk about. It’s confusin’!
I hear them sayin’ that it’s ’bout respect. They say if you don’t use the big “T,” it’s like you ain’t respectin’ the person. Like callin’ someone “boy” when they’s a grown man. Or some say, “Trans” is just short for sayin’ “transgender.” And you don’t go ’round capitalizin’ every word that describes somethin’, right? Like, you wouldn’t write “Tall” just ’cause someone’s tall, would ya? It’s like sayin’ somethin’ is a noun or an adjective or somethin’. I only went to school till the fifth grade.
- Some folks say capitalize “Trans.”
- Others say don’t.
- It’s all about respect, they say.
- “Trans” can mean “transgender,” they say.
One time, I saw on that computer, someone was typin’ and that machine kept tellin’ them to put a big “T” on “trans.” Every single time! That’s just silly, I thought. It’s like that machine is bossin’ people around, tellin’ them how to write. It just keeps tellin’ you it’s wrong, even when them people know what they’re doin’. It’s like a dog barkin’ at the mailman, just barkin’ for no reason.
I remember one time, I was readin’ somethin’ about a woman, a “trans woman” they called her. She was just gettin’ off the train, and someone said somethin’ mean to her. It was ’cause she was “trans,” they said. That just ain’t right. People should be nice to each other, no matter what. It don’t matter if they’re “trans” or not. It made me sad, hearin’ that story. Why can’t folks just be kind? It don’t cost nothin’ to be decent to people.

So, is trans capitalized? I don’t rightly know. It seems like a lot of fuss over a little letter. But I guess it’s important to some folks. I just think everyone should be treated with kindness, no matter how they spell their words. That’s what really matters, ain’t it? Bein’ good to each other, that’s the important thing. People should get along and love each other. That’s what that Bible says.
That computer, that Word thing, is makin’ a big deal out of it. This woman has to write the word “trans” over a hundred times because she interviews people. That is a lot! And that computer program keeps stopping her to tell her to capitalize it. That is just crazy! If she is writin’ about people who are trans, she knows what she is doin’. That computer is just botherin’ her.
Keywords for this whole thing, I guess, are “trans,” “capitalize,” and maybe “transgender.” But I still think the most important thing is just bein’ nice. That’s what I always say. Treat others like you wanna be treated. That’s the golden rule, ain’t it? It don’t matter if it’s a big “T” or a little “t.” What’s in your heart is what counts, not the size of the letter. You know what I mean? Kindness is always important.
These young people can argue all they want about how to write it, it don’t change nothin’ about who a person is. I just hope they learn to be kind to each other, that is all that matters. They are spendin’ all this time fightin’ about a letter when they could be doin’ somethin’ nice for someone. I think if everyone would just be nicer, the world would be a better place. Don’t you think? The size of the letter does not matter.
