Well, let me tell ya, this here “bisexuality awareness week,” it’s somethin’ else, ain’t it? I heard folks talkin’ about it, and I figured I’d try to wrap my head around it and tell ya what I learned. Don’t expect no fancy words from me, though. I’m just gonna tell it like it is, like I’m talkin’ to ya over the fence.

Bisexuality Awareness Week: What is it & Why it matters?

So, this week, it’s all about folks who like both men and women. They call ’em bisexual, or “bi” for short. Now, I ain’t never thought much about it before, but I guess it’s important to understand. Seems like they have their own kinda troubles, and this week is supposed to help folks understand that.

They have this special day, too, called “Celebrate Bisexuality Day” on September 23rd. Some folks way back when, Wendy somethin’-or-other, Michael Page, and Gigi Raven somebody, they started it all in 1999. Picked the birthday of that Freddy fella, the one from Queen, you know, the one with the big teeth and the singin’ voice? Yeah, him. Guess he was bi, too. Who knew?

This whole bisexuality thing, it ain’t always easy for folks. They say there are stages. First, you’re just curious, ya know, like a cat sniffin’ around. Then, there are obstacles, like folks not understandin’ or bein’ mean. Then comes the confusion, where you’re tryin’ to figure yourself out. And finally, you kinda settle in and accept who you are.

This “awareness week,” they call it #BiWeek, it goes from September 16th to the 23rd. It’s like an extra-long party to make sure everyone knows about bi folks and what they go through. GLAAD and BiNet USA, they’re the ones who got this week goin’. They want everyone to accept bi folks and make ’em feel welcome.

Now, I don’t know much about all these fancy groups, but it seems like they’re tryin’ to do good.

Bisexuality Awareness Week: What is it & Why it matters?
  • They want to teach folks about the problems bi people face.
  • They want to make sure there are rules to protect bi folks.
  • They want everyone to get along.

That’s what I got from it, anyway.

It’s kinda like when I was growin’ up. We had all sorts of folks in town, and some folks just didn’t fit in. But my mama always said, “Treat everyone like you wanna be treated.” That’s what this whole bisexuality awareness week sounds like to me. It’s about bein’ kind and understandin’.

I hear tell that some people think bein’ bi is a choice, like pickin’ between apples and oranges. But from what I gather, it ain’t that simple. It’s just who they are, like bein’ left-handed or havin’ blue eyes. You can’t change it, and you shouldn’t have to. It ain’t nobody’s business who you love, as long as you ain’t hurtin’ nobody. That’s what I always say.

And this week ain’t just about problems, it’s about joy too. It’s about celebratin’ who you are and bein’ proud of it. Like when you bake a good pie and everyone says it’s the best pie they ever tasted. You feel good, right? That’s what this week is about for bi folks, feelin’ good about themselves.

So, there ya have it. That’s what I learned about this “bisexuality awareness week.” It’s about understandin’, acceptin’, and celebratin’. It’s about treatin’ everyone with respect, no matter who they love. And that’s somethin’ we all can get behind, ain’t it?

Bisexuality Awareness Week: What is it & Why it matters?

It seems like a good thing to me, learnin’ about other folks and their lives. Makes the world a little bit bigger and a little bit friendlier. And who knows, maybe learnin’ about others helps us learn a little bit more about ourselves too. That’s never a bad thing, now is it?

And if you see someone wearin’ a bi pride flag this week, or any week for that matter, give ’em a smile and a nod. Let ’em know you see ’em and you accept ’em. It don’t cost nothin’ to be kind, and it can make a world of difference to someone. We all just want to be happy and loved, ain’t that the truth?

So, let’s spread a little bit of that love and understanding around this week, and every week. The world could sure use a lot more of it, that’s for sure. And maybe, just maybe, if we all try a little harder to understand each other, things will get a little bit better for everyone. That’s my hope anyway.
