My Personal Journey with the Depo Shot
So last Tuesday, I finally decided to try giving that Depo shot myself at home. Honestly? Got tired of running to the clinic every three months like clockwork. Dug up that tiny vial from my medicine drawer – been sitting there since my last doctor’s visit. Cold as ice when I touched it.

First step? Washed my hands raw under steaming hot water for a full minute. Better safe than sorry. Then grabbed the alcohol swab, rubbed it hard over my belly fat area – left side, about where I wear my jeans’ pocket. Swear I pressed too hard cause my skin turned bright pink.
Now the scary part: pulling the liquid into the syringe. Flipped the vial upside down, stuck the needle in – felt like stabbing rubber. Drew back the plunger slow… real slow. Tiny bubbles popped up! Freaked out thinking I ruined the dose. Had to tap the syringe like in those hospital shows till bubbles disappeared.
Pinched a fat roll near my hip bone with my free hand. Deep breath in – jammed the needle straight down like planting a dart. Hurt less than a mosquito bite, no lie. Pushed the plunger till every last drop emptied out. Yanked it quick, slapped on a bandaid. Whole thing? Took under five minutes.
What Worked Surprisingly Well
- Cost saved big time. No clinic co-pay bleeding my wallet dry
- Control felt powerful. Done when I wanted, wearing pajamas even
- Privacy nailed it. Zero awkward small talk with nurses
What Sucked Hard
- First-time shakes. Hands trembled loading the syringe – nearly dropped it
- Bruise party. Next day looked like someone punched my gut
- Panic attacks. Kept triple-checking if I injected air bubbles
Bottom line? Yeah I’ll keep doing it myself. That clinic drive always made me late for work. But I won’t lie – that first plunge? Thought my heart would explode. Practice next time should feel less like defusing a bomb.
