So yesterday I was trying to write this anniversary card for my partner, right? Ugh, just felt stuck. All I wanted was something quick but really heartfelt, you know? Not some cheesy novel-length poem.

I grabbed my notebook and pen, sat down at the kitchen table with a strong cup of coffee – gotta have the fuel for thinking! Scrolled through my phone first for ideas. Big mistake. Way too many results. Saw long, complicated quotes that felt super formal and totally not like me. Felt overwhelmed. Closed the browser after like five minutes.
Switching Tactics
Thought, okay, keep it simple. What do I actually feel thankful for? Just wrote that question down. Then just started scribbling random phrases that popped into my head whenever I pictured my partner. Didn’t worry about it sounding perfect. It was messy, my handwriting sucks anyway.
Here’s the raw stuff I jotted:
- “You showing up for me, every single day – thank you.”
- “Thank you for loving me, even my grumpy mornings.”
- “Seriously, thanks for putting up with my nonsense!”
- “Your hugs = my favorite thing. Thanks.”
- “Feeling your love makes everything better. Simple as that. Thank you.”
Testing ‘Em Out
Read them over later. Realized they all had a few things in common. Short? Check. Specific? Kinda – I was hinting at real things we do/say. Heartfelt? Felt way more genuine than the stuff I found online.
Ended up writing the hugs one inside the card. Added a tiny doodle of a hug. Partner loved it. Saw that little smile? Knew it landed way better than anything fancy I could have copied.

So yeah, that’s my practical mess yesterday. Lesson learned? Skip the endless searching. Grab a pen, think about what makes you truly thankful in that specific moment for that specific person, and write the first simple words that feel right. Done. Works every time. Go try it!
