My Messy Undercut Grow-Out Journey
So I woke up one morning done with my undercut. Just felt like shaving half my head was annoying. Decided right then to grow it back. Seriously underestimated the awkward phase.

The Awkward Phase Hit Hard
First month in? Total chaos. My short shaved bits stood straight up like weird little spikes while the longer hair hung down. Looked like my head got electrocuted. Tried smashing it down with gel – huge mistake. Just turned crunchy and greasy. Hated every mirror moment.
Timeline Reality Check
- Month 1-2: Pure helmet-head vibes. Stuck wearing beanies constantly, even indoors. Wife teased me mercilessly.
- Month 3: Side bits finally reached my ear. Started tucking them behind my ears – looked less insane but felt weird.
- Month 4: Could kinda brush it all together? Needed a ton of pomade to glue the shorter pieces to the longer ones. Looked messy on purpose to hide the mess.
- Month 5-6: Holy progress! Shaved parts actually blended with the rest. Stopped looking like I had a bald patch rebellion.
What Actually Worked
Figured out styling tricks through trial and terrible error:
- Switched to Matte Paste: Gel looks trash. Matte paste hides the glue-job better. Used just a tiny bit on my fingertips to press the short hairs down towards my scalp. Game changer.
- Blow-drying with Fingers: Damp hair? Flipped head upside down, blasted it dry with my fingers pushing the shaved bits the way they should grow. Gave way more control.
- Embracing Messy Styles: Stopped fighting the funk. Slick looks highlighted the weird layers. Textured, messy quiffs or side sweeps disguised the different lengths perfectly. Threw in braids along the longer section too to keep things contained.
- Patience & Trims: Yeah, needed actual trims on the longer parts to stop them looking like a mullet monster. Told my barber “Just clean up the ends, ignore the grow-out zone.” Didn’t touch the undercut bits at all.
Where I Landed
Honestly took like 7 months before it felt “normal.” Still shorter underneath than on top, but you gotta get close to see it. Biggest lesson? Forget slick styles. Texture is your best friend. Loads of awkward hat days, but finally feels like one head of hair again. Would I do it again? Probably not. But glad I stuck it out.
