Alright so listen up, I figured since I tried this myself, why not share the whole mess? Started totally clueless, phone in hand like, “how the heck do people even…?”

First Attempt: Pure Chaos
Grabbed my phone, clicked the camera app, and just pointed it down there. Lighting? Terrible. Like, basement-at-midnight terrible. Took a couple quick shots. Looked at ’em… holy crap, no. Just shadows and blur. Felt kinda dumb, honestly. Deleted those disasters immediately. Lesson one: light is your friend, maybe your best friend.
The “Research” Phase
Okay, needed a plan. Didn’t ask anyone, obviously. Just stared at the ceiling thinking. Basics seemed to be:
- Lighting: Can’t see anything in the dark. Duh.
- Angle: Pointing straight down? Looks weird.
- Focus: Blurry junk is useless.
- Background: My messy laundry pile? Not sexy.
Figured I’d just experiment. What’s the worst that could happen? More bad pics to delete.
The Setup
Cleared a spot on the bed. Actually made it look decent. Found a lamp – not the big overhead one, that casts awful shadows. A smaller one from the side. Much better. Not movie-set quality, but at least you could see stuff now. Phone cleaned the camera lens on my shirt. Seriously, fingerprints ruin everything.
Trying Different Angles
This felt awkward as hell at first. Held the phone from the side, like how you’d take a mirror selfie. Too much torso, not enough… subject. Too high up. Then lower, like hip level. Better. Tried holding it almost horizontal, lying down slightly on the bed. Bingo. That angle looked way more natural, less like a weird biology class diagram.

Used the dang volume button to take the shot. Stabbing at the screen button was shaky. Big difference right there.
The Focus Game
Tapping on the screen where it needed to be sharp was crucial. My phone sometimes decided the bedsheet was more interesting. Had to really force it to focus on the right area. Took a few tries. Hearing that little auto-focus beep or seeing the box turn green? Key moment.
Checking & The Reality Check
Took maybe 10-15 shots with small angle tweaks or slight moves. Then actually looked at them properly, sitting down. Zoomed in, scrolled through. Not gonna lie, most got dumped straight into the digital trash. Too dark? Trash. Blurry? Trash. Weird angle making it look weirdly proportioned? Trash. Ended up with maybe 2-3 that looked… okay? Not amazing, just okay. Acceptable. Proof of life, I guess.
Conclusion? Kinda Still Suck
Yeah, I managed to get a pic. It exists. It’s sharp. You can see things. The background is clean. Lighting is flat but functional. Is it gonna set the world on fire? Nope. Still kinda looks like a dude took it himself in his bedroom – because that’s exactly what happened. It’s a process. Takes practice, just like anything awkward. Less terrified of trying again now, maybe mess with natural light next time. Still feel a bit silly doing it, though. Just being real.
