Getting Started with Sideways Fun

Okay, so let me tell you about our journey with, uh, getting comfortable doing it on our sides. It’s not like rocket science, but for a while, we were just kinda bumping into each other awkwardly, you know? We’d heard it was supposed to be super chill and intimate, so we were like, “Alright, let’s give this a real shot.” We figured it couldn’t be that hard, but you know how these things go. Sometimes the simplest sounding stuff needs a bit of practice.

The First Few Tries – A Bit Clunky

So, the first time, we just both rolled onto our sides. Seemed simple enough. I decided to lie on my left, and my partner got behind me. But then it was like, where do the arms go? And legs? My arm was kinda trapped, and we weren’t quite aligned. It felt a bit like we were playing Twister without the mat, all limbs and not much rhythm. We definitely weren’t smooth operators right out of the gate, let me tell ya. We giggled a lot, which helped ease the awkwardness, but it wasn’t exactly what we were aiming for, romance-wise. It was clear we needed to actually think about it a bit more than just flopping down.

Figuring Out the Spoon – The Classic

We decided to really focus and tackle the classic spooning position first. This seemed like the easiest entry point, the one everyone talks about. So, here’s what we found worked after a bit of messing around:

  • I got comfy on my side, usually my left, just habit I guess. I made sure my back was kinda straight but still relaxed, not all tensed up.
  • Then my partner snuggled up right behind me, also on their side, facing my back. The real trick, we discovered, was getting our hips aligned properly. We had to do a bit of a shuffle, a little scootching here and there. It wasn’t instant.
  • Pillows! Oh man, pillows are a game changer. I grabbed one and stuck it between my knees. Seriously, it made a huge difference for comfort. Kept my hips from getting all wonky and taking the pressure off. Sometimes my partner would use a thin pillow under their head too, or even a small one to prop up their top leg slightly if needed.
  • Once we were lined up and pillowed-up, it was much easier. The key was just making small adjustments until it felt right for both of us. Not too much pressure anywhere, just kinda… fitting together. We learned to actually say, “Move a bit this way,” or “How’s that?”

Trying a Face-to-Face Approach

After we got the spooning thing down pretty well, we got a bit more adventurous. We thought, “What about facing each other? That sounds nice.” This one was a bit different, a new set of things to figure out. Here’s how that went for us:

  • We both laid on our sides, facing each other. This already felt more intimate, which was a big plus. You can actually see each other, which is great.
  • Legs were the next puzzle. We ended up with a sort of intertwined leg thing. My top leg usually went over my partner’s hip, or sometimes we’d just kind of bend our knees and let them rest against each other, almost like a cuddle. It wasn’t a super specific “you must do this” kind of thing, more like what felt natural and stable at the moment.
  • This position was great for, you know, kissing and looking at each other. Made it feel really connected. Depth could be a bit trickier to manage initially compared to spooning, so we had to adjust our angles a bit.
  • Again, a pillow between the knees for the person whose leg was on the bottom, or even for both if you like, can really up the comfort level. We experimented with that a bit, sometimes a pillow under the top hip too for better alignment.

What We Learned (The Good Stuff)

So, after all that trial and error, we kinda nailed it. It’s not like we’re pros, but we definitely got the hang of making it work for us. The biggest takeaway for us was communication. Like, actually saying, “Hey, can you shift a bit?” or “Is this good for you?” Sounds obvious, but sometimes you just assume, or you don’t want to break the mood, but it’s way better to just ask. It stops things from getting uncomfortable or frustrating.

And pillows. I can’t stress pillows enough. They fill in the gaps, support your body, and just make everything more sustainable and comfy. We also found that once you get the hang of it, these side positions are actually super relaxing. Less pressure on wrists or knees like some other positions can put on you. It’s definitely become a go-to for us when we want something more chill and intimate, or if one of us is tired. Took a bit of practice, sure, and some patience, but totally worth it in the end. We just kept trying different little adjustments until it clicked. So yeah, that was our adventure into side-lying fun. Give it a whirl, fiddle around, talk to each other, and see what works for you guys!
