If care is more important than love, what does that mean? (How this changes your view on connections)

So, I’ve been mulling this over for a while, this whole idea, you know? The title for today’s ramble is something that really hit home for me through, well, just living, I guess. It’s not something I read in a book; it’s something I felt in my gut and saw with my own eyes.

How It All Started To Click

It wasn’t like a lightbulb moment, more like a slow burn. For years, I heard people talk about love, love, love. And yeah, love’s nice. It’s a warm fuzzy feeling. But I started noticing something, especially when things got tough for people around me, or even for myself.

I remember this one time, a buddy of mine, let’s call him Dave. Dave was going through a real rough patch. Lost his job, things weren’t great at home. Everyone was like, “Oh, we love you, Dave! Sending positive vibes!” And that’s sweet, right? But what did Dave really need?

The Nitty-Gritty of “Care” in Action

This is where things got practical for me. I saw another friend, Sarah, step in. She didn’t just send heart emojis. Here’s what she did:

  • She actually called Dave, not texted, but called, and just listened for like an hour. Didn’t offer much advice, just let him vent.
  • Then, she helped him polish his resume. Not just said “you should update it,” but sat down and worked on it with him.
  • She cooked a big batch of stew and dropped it off, ’cause she knew he probably wasn’t eating right.
  • She even offered to watch his kids one afternoon so he could go to an interview without stressing about childcare.

Now, I’m sure Sarah loved Dave as a friend. But what I saw there, that was care. That was action. That was practical, get-your-hands-dirty stuff.

My Own Little Experiment (or rather, life happening)

Then it happened in my own life. My old cat, Whiskers, got really sick. Vets, pills, special food, the whole nine yards. I loved that cat, sure. But just “loving” him wouldn’t have cleaned up his messes at 3 AM. “Loving” him wouldn’t have remembered which pill was for when, or gently syringed water into his mouth when he wouldn’t drink.

If care is more important than love, what does that mean? (How this changes your view on connections)

That was care. It was exhausting. It was sometimes gross. It was definitely not romantic or poetic. It was just doing what needed to be done. I had to:

  • Set alarms for medication, day and night.
  • Learn to give subcutaneous fluids, which terrified me at first.
  • Spend hours just sitting with him, making sure he wasn’t alone, even if he was just sleeping.
  • Figure out what tiny bits of food he might actually eat and tempt him with it.

That was the stuff that mattered. The feeling of love was the fuel, maybe, but the care was the engine and the wheels and the steering. Without the actual doing, the love would have just been a sad feeling while he faded away quicker.

The Big Realization

And that’s when it really cemented for me. Love is often passive. It’s a state of being. Care is active. It’s a verb. It’s a choice you make over and over again, especially when it’s inconvenient or hard.

I started seeing it everywhere. Parents with new babies – yeah, they love them, but the endless diaper changes, the sleepless nights, the feeding, the rocking? That’s pure, unadulterated care. People looking after elderly parents – the patience, the help with daily tasks, the appointments. That’s care.

Think about it. You can “love” someone from a distance. You can “love” an idea. But you can’t really “care” for something without getting involved, without effort, without some kind of sacrifice, big or small.

If care is more important than love, what does that mean? (How this changes your view on connections)

So yeah, that’s my take. Love is a beautiful starting point, a wonderful emotion. But when the chips are down, when life gets real, it’s the care that shows up and does the heavy lifting. It’s the care that truly makes the difference. It’s what holds things together. For me, care is the practical, tangible proof of something deeper, and honestly, it’s the part that I’ve come to value most.
