My Little Journey with “sympto”

Alright, so let me tell you about this thing I called “sympto”. It wasn’t some big, official project, nothing like that. It was more like a little helper I cobbled together out of sheer necessity, you know? We were just drowning in these tiny, annoying issues popping up everywhere. Like whack-a-mole, seriously. You’d fix one, two more would show their ugly faces.

The breaking point, or why I even bothered.

I remember this one week, man, it was brutal. Every morning, the dashboard was red. Not like, “system down” red, but “a dozen little things are grumpy” red. And figuring out why each little thing was grumpy took forever. Log diving, checking configs, asking around… it was eating up so much time. Time we should’ve spent on, you know, actual work, building new stuff. I just got fed up. I thought, there’s gotta be a quicker way to get a first look, to triage these darn symptoms before you go full detective mode.

Getting My Hands Dirty: Building “sympto”

So, one evening, I just started sketching it out. Not on paper, really, more in my head and then straight into code. Real rough and ready. My first thought was simple:

  • I wanted it to check a few key health indicators automatically.
  • Maybe ping a few services we relied on.
  • And pull the last few error lines from the main logs. Super basic.

I hacked together a script. Probably wasn’t the prettiest code, not gonna lie. Used a bit of Python, because it’s quick for this kind of stuff. First version, it just spat out text to the console. But even that, even that little bit of automation, felt like a win. I ran it, and bam, there was a quick snapshot. “Okay, service X is slow, log Y has this weird message.” Stuff like that.

Then I started adding more. Little by little.

  • Made the output a bit nicer, maybe some colors for errors. Still in the terminal, mind you. No fancy UI.
  • Added checks for disk space on critical servers. Sounds dumb, but you’d be surprised how often that was the culprit.
  • Put in a way to quickly check recent deployment statuses.

It grew organically, based on whatever new “symptom” was the flavor of the week. I didn’t plan it all out. It was pure reaction, building what I needed right then.

What “sympto” Actually Did (and Didn’t Do)

So, “sympto” became my go-to first step. Before I’d even open a monitoring dashboard sometimes, I’d run my little script. It gave me a quick, dirty overview. It helped me narrow down where to look next. Saved me a bunch of clicks and context switching, that’s for sure.

But here’s the kicker: “sympto” never fixed anything. Of course not. It was just a diagnostic helper. And sometimes, it just confirmed that yeah, things were a mess, but didn’t point to an obvious single cause. Because often, the real problems were deeper. They were in the architecture, or in how we pushed updates, or sometimes, just plain old complex bugs that needed proper investigation.

What “sympto” really did was highlight patterns. After using it for a while, you’d see the same kinds of “symptoms” cropping up. And that, that was the valuable part. It wasn’t the tool itself, but the insight it accidentally gave. It made it easier to argue for fixing those underlying, bigger issues. “Look,” I could say, “my little script has flagged this same area five times this week. Maybe we should look deeper than just patching the symptom.”

It was never adopted officially, or anything. It was just my thing. A couple of teammates used it when they saw me using it, found it handy sometimes. But it lived and died on my machine, pretty much. When I moved on from that particular mess, “sympto” kind of faded away too. But the process of building it, of reacting to a need and just making something, that stuck with me. Sometimes the simplest tools, born out of frustration, are the ones you remember the most, eh?
