Alright, so I’d been letting my hair kinda just be for a while, you know? Got a bit shaggy, a bit annoying. Decided it was time for a change, something sharp but still easy to handle. That’s when I landed on the idea of a short hair men’s undercut. Seemed like a solid choice.

Getting Started: The Decision and a Bit of ‘Research’
First off, I didn’t just walk in blind. I spent a little time, not much, just scrolling through some pics online. Just to get a feel for the different ways it could look. Some were super aggressive, shaved right up high. Others were a bit more blended. I was leaning towards something clean, definitely short on the sides and back, but with enough on top to actually do something with. Didn’t want to look like I was trying too hard, you know?
My main goal was something that wouldn’t need a ton of fuss in the morning. Get up, quick comb or run my fingers through it, and go. That was the dream.
The Barber Shop Trip: Making it Happen
So, I headed down to my usual barber. Walked in, waited my turn. Standard stuff. When it was my go, I plopped down in the chair. My barber, good guy, asked “The usual?” and I was like, “Nah, thinking of switching it up today.”
I tried to explain what I was after. “Thinking an undercut,” I said. “Real short on the sides and back, maybe a number 2 guard? And then leave a decent bit of length on top, enough to style a bit, push back or to the side.” I used my hands a lot, miming where the clippers should go and how much to leave on top. It’s always a bit of a gamble trying to translate what’s in your head to someone else, right?
The Actual Cut: Clippers, Scissors, and Trust
He nodded, seemed to get it. First came the clippers. Bzzzzzzzz. That feeling of the cold metal against your scalp. He started on the sides, working his way up to the line we sort of agreed on. Then the back. It’s always a bit weird feeling all that hair just falling away. You just gotta trust they know what they’re doing.

After the clippers did their main job, he switched to scissors for the top. Snip, snip, snip. He worked through it, taking off length, adding some texture. I think he thinned it out a little too, which is good ’cause my hair can get pretty thick and bulky.
- Sides and back: Done with clippers, nice and short.
- Top: Kept longer, trimmed with scissors for some style.
- Blending: He did a bit of blending where the short sides met the longer top, so it wasn’t just a stark line. That was important.
He asked if the length on top was okay, showed me in the mirror. I ruffled it a bit, said, “Yeah, that looks good.”
The Reveal and First Impressions
Once he was done, brushed off all the loose hairs, and spun me around to face the mirror properly, I had a good look. Man, what a difference. It felt so much lighter. The sides were super clean, and the contrast with the longer hair on top was pretty cool. It definitely looked sharper, more put-together than what I walked in with.
He put a tiny bit of product in, just to show me one way to style it, sort of pushed back and to the side. Looked decent.
Living With It: Styling and Maintenance
So, I’ve had it for a bit now. And honestly, it’s pretty much what I wanted. Mornings are easy. I can just run my fingers through it with a bit of water if I’m lazy. Or, if I want to look a bit more polished, a little bit of paste or wax, mess it up a bit, or comb it neat. Takes like, two minutes, tops.

The grow-out is something I’ll have to keep an eye on. Undercuts can look a bit rough if the sides get too long while the top is still a good length. So, I reckon I’ll need to get the sides trimmed more regularly than I used to get full haircuts. But that’s no biggie.
Overall, super happy with the switch. If you’re thinking about a short hair men’s undercut, I’d say go for it. Just make sure you talk to your barber, maybe show a picture or two. It’s a solid look, and pretty low-maintenance which is a big win in my book.
