Getting Around to Writing That Letter
So, I finally did it today. You know, that letter I’ve been meaning to write to my aunt? Yeah, that one. It’s been on my mind for ages, just floating around in the back of my head.

First thing, I needed to actually sit down and focus. Found a quiet corner, grabbed a cup of tea. Needed to get in the right headspace, you know? Trying to think about her, what she’s been up to, what I wanted to share.
Then I just started jotting down some ideas. Didn’t want to forget anything important. My list looked something like this:
- Ask how she’s really doing.
- Share a quick update about my job/studies.
- Mention that funny thing that happened last week – thought she’d like it.
- Recall that memory from when I was a kid visiting her place.
- Ask about cousin Mark.
Okay, notepad ready. Pen in hand. Stared at the blank page for a bit. That first line is always a bit awkward, isn’t it? I just went for a simple “Dearest Auntie,” – felt right, warm.
Then the words started to flow a bit easier. I talked about what I’ve been busy with, kept it light. Tried to make it sound like me talking, not some formal announcement. I made sure to ask lots of questions too. It’s not just about me dumping my news, right? Wanted to show I care about her stuff too.
Honestly, writing it out felt different than just texting or a quick call. More thoughtful, I guess? Took a bit more effort, but in a good way. I found myself smiling thinking about some old times I mentioned.

Once I thought I was done, I read it over. Out loud, actually. Helps catch weird sentences. Made a few little tweaks here and there, fixed a typo. Wanted it to be clear and heartfelt.
Finally, folded it up, slid it into an envelope. Addressed it carefully – double-checked the postcode! Stuck a stamp on it. Felt like a proper, completed task.
And you know what? It felt really good. Like I’d actually connected, properly. Much better than just thinking about doing it. Now, just gotta pop it in the post box tomorrow.
