Okay, so I had this crazy idea the other day. You know how sometimes you just can’t get a song out of your head? And sometimes you just can’t seem to focus on studying? I thought, “What if I combine the two?” So, I decided to use Taylor Swift lyrics to help me study. Hear me out!
The Experiment Begins
I started by picking a subject I was really struggling with – organic chemistry. Ugh. It’s all just squiggly lines and letters to me. Then, I went through a bunch of Taylor’s songs and picked out lines that, with a little imagination, could relate to the concepts I needed to learn.
- For example, for remembering the different functional groups, I used the line “All’s well that ends well, but I’m in a new hell every time” from “All Too Well.” It is easy for me to link those words.
- Then, for balancing chemical equations, I thought of “We are never ever getting back together,” I imagined the elements as ex-boyfriends or ex-girlfriends who were definitely not getting back together in equal numbers.
- I also found “Long live the walls we crashed through. I had the time of my life, with you” from “Long Live”. It is easy for me to remember.
Putting it into Practice
I spent a whole afternoon writing out these lyrics, drawing little diagrams next to them, and basically turning my study notes into a Taylor Swift-themed masterpiece. It was kind of ridiculous, but it was also…fun? I was actually enjoying myself, which is not something I usually associate with organic chemistry.
The Result
The next day, I had a quiz. And guess what? I actually remembered stuff! It wasn’t perfect, but I definitely did better than I usually do. The lyrics popped into my head, and they helped me recall the actual concepts. The silly associations I made actually worked! I think this can work for most people.
I’m not saying this is a foolproof method for everyone, but it definitely made studying more enjoyable for me. And hey, anything that helps you get through organic chemistry is worth a try, right?
