Okay, so, the other day, things got a little heated with my boyfriend. It wasn’t pretty. We were arguing, and he, well, he yelled at me. It caught me completely off guard, and honestly, it sucked.

Boyfriend Yells at Me: Red Flag? Dealing with a Yelling Partner.

It all started pretty innocently. We were talking about…gosh, I can’t even remember exactly what now. Something small, probably about chores or something. I think I made a comment, maybe a little sarcastic, and he just snapped. His voice got loud, really loud, and he started going off about how I never listen, or how I always do this, or that… you know, the usual stuff that comes out when someone’s lost their cool.

My Reaction

My first instinct was to yell back. I mean, who wouldn’t, right? But then, I kind of froze. I just stood there, feeling my face get hot and my heart start to pound. I think I mumbled something like, “Don’t yell at me,” but it came out all shaky and weak.

Inside, I was a mess. Part of me was furious, like, “How dare he talk to me like that?!” But another part was just…sad. And confused. It felt like this huge wall had just gone up between us.

After He Calmed Down

After a few minutes (which felt like forever), he started to calm down. His voice went back to normal, and he kind of slumped, like all the energy had gone out of him. He apologized, saying he was stressed about work and didn’t mean to take it out on me.

I said it was okay, but honestly, it wasn’t. I was still upset, and even though he’d apologized, the words were still ringing in my ears. We kind of awkwardly moved on, but the whole vibe was off for the rest of the night.

Processing It All

Later, after he’d gone to bed, I sat up thinking about it. I realized a few things:

  • His yelling wasn’t okay. Stress or no stress, it’s not cool to yell at your partner like that.
  • I need to get better at standing up for myself. Freezing up wasn’t the best response.
  • We need to talk about this. Not in the heat of the moment, but when we’re both calm.

Next day,I talk with him and say what I want * apologized *’s getting better now.

So, yeah, that’s my story about getting yelled at. It wasn’t fun, but I guess it was a learning experience. Hopefully, we can both do better next time a disagreement pops up.
