Alright, so I was digging around the internet the other day, trying to figure out what the heck people are calling that hairstyle that hockey players have. You know, the one where it’s kinda long and flows out the back of their helmets? Turns out, it’s called “flow hair” or sometimes “hockey hair.” Who knew?

So, I started this little project to document the whole process of growing out my hair to get that coveted “flow.” It all started with a simple Google search, I guess. I typed in something like “how to get flow hair,” and bam, a whole bunch of articles and forum posts popped up.
First thing I did was read through a bunch of those articles. They all pretty much said the same thing.
- Number one, be patient. Apparently, this whole flow thing takes time.
- Number two, don’t get it cut too often. You gotta let it grow, man. But they did say to get it trimmed every once in a while, just to keep it healthy and looking decent.
- Number three, use some decent shampoo and conditioner. I guess healthy hair is key to a good flow.
Trying It Out
I decided to give it a shot. I mean, I’ve always kinda wanted to try long hair, and this seemed like as good an excuse as any. I went to my barber and told him what I was going for. He chuckled a bit, but he got it. He trimmed up the back, just a little, and told me to come back in a few months.
The first few weeks were kinda awkward. My hair was at that in-between stage where it wasn’t really short, but it wasn’t long enough to do anything with. I felt like I looked like a mess most of the time. But I stuck with it, washing it regularly and trying not to mess with it too much.
After a couple of months, it started to get some length. I could finally start to see that “flow” taking shape. It was actually kinda cool, I gotta admit. I started wearing hats more often, just to keep it out of my face, but also because it kinda looked good with the hair flowing out the back.

The Results
It’s been about six months now, and I think I’ve finally achieved peak flow. It’s not quite down to my shoulders, but it’s definitely long enough to flow out from under a hat or a helmet if I was wearing one. I’ve gotten a few compliments, which is always nice. And honestly, I’m kinda digging the look. It’s different, but it’s fun.
So, yeah, that’s my journey to achieving “flow hair.” It wasn’t that hard, really. Just took some patience and a little bit of care. If you’re thinking about trying it, I say go for it. It’s just hair, right? It’ll grow back if you don’t like it.
