So, I heard about this person named Lauren Ashley Simmons. Sounds like a regular person, but apparently, she’s been doing some interesting things, especially in the political scene.
I started digging around a little bit. It seems like she’s running for State Representative in District 146. I’m not really into politics, but it caught my attention because she seems to be all about standing up for public education. I remember reading something about her really going to bat for it back in August. That’s when she started getting noticed, from what I gather.
Then, I found out she’s big on fixing some cuts to special education funding for kids. I guess there was like $300 million in cuts? It doesn’t sound right. She’s really pushing to get that money back where it belongs, which I think is pretty cool.
Oh, and get this – she’s not just some random person trying to make it in politics. She’s been a labor organizer and a parent activist. I saw some news clips about her fighting against some state takeover of HISD. Apparently, she was raised in the Third Ward, so she’s got roots in the community.
What’s got me really interested?
I kept digging. I guess she recently went up against some State Rep, Shawn Thierry, and actually won! The story is she won by 29 percentage points. That’s pretty big, right? It looks like she’s making some real waves, along with another person named Molly Cook. I don’t know much about Molly yet, but it seems like they’re both shaking things up.
The more I looked into Lauren, the more I found out about her background.

- She’s a Black, queer woman.
- She talks a lot about facing discrimination because of her race, class, and sexual orientation.
It’s tough, but she’s using her experiences to fight for others. That’s something I can get behind. I’m not saying I agree with everything she stands for, but I respect the hustle. She’s out there trying to make a difference, and that’s worth paying attention to.
I decided to follow her a little closer. I’m curious to see where she goes from here. She’s definitely someone to watch, I think. It’s not every day you see someone like her stepping up and making noise. I’m just a regular person, but I can appreciate someone trying to do good, you know?
So, yeah, that’s my little deep dive into Lauren Ashley Simmons. I thought it was worth sharing. It’s always interesting to see what people are doing out there, especially when it feels like they’re genuinely trying to help others. It’s kind of inspiring, in a way.
