Okay, so I want to talk about this Mirena IUD thing and my experience with it, specifically how it messed with my sex drive. I got the Mirena inserted about, I don’t know, two years ago? Everything was fine at first, no real issues.

Mirena IUD and Low Sex Drive: Is There a Connection? Simple Ways to Get Your Desire Back

Then, I started noticing that my desire to, you know, get busy with my husband, was, well, disappearing. It wasn’t like a sudden drop, more like a slow fade. I just wasn’t feeling it anymore.

At first, I blamed it on stress. Work was crazy, the kids were being a handful, the usual stuff. But even when things calmed down, my libido stayed in hibernation. I started to worry, honestly. I mean, I love my husband, and intimacy is a big part of our relationship.

  • I did some Googling, of course. You know how it is. You type in a symptom, and suddenly you’re convinced you have some rare disease. Anyway, I found a bunch of forums and articles where women were talking about the same thing – Mirena IUD and low sex drive.
  • Some people said it didn’t affect them at all, but others were in the same boat as me. I read about all sorts of side effects, like mood swings, weight gain, and even vaginal dryness. I experienced some of these as well, especially the mood swings.
  • I also came across this information saying that around 6.4% of people who use Mirena experience low mood or depression within 5 years. Not directly about sex drive, but it kind of made me think about how all these things are connected.

So, I made an appointment with my doctor. I explained everything, and she confirmed that yes, the Mirena could be the culprit. Apparently, it releases a hormone called levonorgestrel, and for some women, this can mess with their libido. She said it wasn’t super common, but definitely possible.

We talked about options. I could get it taken out, try a different IUD, or go back on the pill. I was hesitant about the pill, though. I had some bad experiences with the pill before. It did not help my sex drive either. After a lot of back and forth, I decided to give it a little more time. I figured, maybe my body was still adjusting to the hormones or something.

But a few more months went by, and nothing changed. My sex drive was still MIA. So, I went back to the doctor and asked her to take it out.

I’m considering other birth control options now. It’s a tough decision, honestly. Every method has its pros and cons. But I know one thing for sure: I’m not letting a tiny piece of plastic ruin my sex life.

It’s been a frustrating journey, to say the least. But I’m hoping that by sharing my experience, I can help other women who might be going through the same thing. You’re not alone, and it’s okay to prioritize your sexual health.

What I learned

Trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is. Talk to your doctor. Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself and your needs. There are options out there. You don’t have to settle for a birth control method that makes you feel like less than yourself.

And hey, if you’ve had a similar experience with Mirena or any other form of birth control, feel free to share in the comments. Let’s help each other out, yeah?
