Discrimination is a thing that happens when people are treated unfairly just because of things like their age, gender, skin color, or where they come from. It’s like when someone’s judged for somethin’ they can’t help, like being born a certain way or lookin’ a certain way. It’s not right, but it happens all the time in all sorts of places, from work to school to just everyday life. And the worst part? It’s often done without people even thinkin’ about it, just ‘cause it’s what they’ve always known or heard about others.

The Roots of Discrimination: How It Affects Race, Gender, and More

Now, let’s talk about what discrimination is. It’s when folks make up their minds about someone based on things like their race, how old they are, their sex, and a whole list of other things. This is somethin’ that’s been around for a long time, even before I was born. Back in the day, people might not have had fancy words for it, but they still did it—just treated others like they were less than ‘em, just ‘cause they were different.

One of the big ones is age discrimination. You know, folks get treated bad just ‘cause they’re too old or too young. Older folks might not get hired for a job, just ‘cause they’re considered “past their prime,” even if they got the experience to do it better than anyone else. Same goes for young people. They might not get a chance, even though they’ve got fresh ideas and energy. Ain’t that somethin’?

But that’s not the only kind. You got racial discrimination, too, which is when people are treated bad ‘cause of their skin color. Folks might not even talk about it, but you can feel it in the air, can’t you? Just ‘cause someone’s a different color or comes from somewhere else, they might not get the same treatment as others. And that ain’t fair at all. Every person, no matter their color or where they come from, should be treated the same. But that ain’t always the case, is it?

Gender discrimination is another one. Some folks get treated different just ‘cause they’re a woman or a man. It’s like folks got ideas in their head about what women should do or what men should do, and if you don’t fit into those little boxes, you get looked down on. Women might not get the same pay for the same work, just ‘cause someone thinks they ain’t as good. And men, well, they might get called soft if they cry or do something that ain’t “manly.” Ain’t that a shame?

And don’t get me started on sexual orientation discrimination. Some folks get treated bad just ‘cause they love someone of the same sex. I don’t know why folks gotta judge others for who they love. Love is love, and it ain’t nobody’s business but the people in it. But still, you hear about people gettin’ pushed aside just for that, and it just don’t sit right with me.

The Roots of Discrimination: How It Affects Race, Gender, and More

Discrimination can happen at work, at school, or even when you’re just tryin’ to get by in life. People might not even realize they’re doin’ it, but the damage is still there. Laws have tried to make sure people can’t just treat others bad, but even with all the rules, sometimes it’s like the problems just don’t go away.

There’s some laws out there, like the Racial Discrimination Act, Sex Discrimination Act, and the Disability Discrimination Act, which try to make sure folks can’t just go around doin’ things that hurt others because of what they are or what they got. But sometimes, it still don’t seem enough. And I reckon it’ll take a long time before everyone can be treated right and fair.

So, what do we do about it? Well, the first step is to talk about it. Folks need to understand what it is and how it hurts people. It’s like if you don’t know somethin’ is wrong, how can you fix it? We gotta teach our kids and grandkids that treating people fair ain’t just a good thing to do, it’s the right thing to do. And when folks see someone else bein’ treated bad, they should stand up and say something. One voice might not change the world, but it sure can make a difference.

Discrimination ain’t just about race or gender or any one thing. It’s about how people get treated based on something that don’t even matter. What matters is the heart of a person, how kind they are, and how they treat others. So next time, remember, just ‘cause someone’s different don’t mean they deserve any less.
